Sensory Bands
A sensory band is a glove or a pocket that has attachments added to it, inside and out, that patients can twiddle and fiddle. They are used to calm patients with dementia or Alzheimers by giving them something to do with their hands, or just for comfort to be enjoyed by elderly patients. You need: Pair of 6.5mm knitting needles Wool scraps in a variety of textures and colours Beads, zips or ribbons. Anything that can be twiddled, but not break. Pattern Cast on 40 stitches in chunky wool, or two strands of double knitting wool work in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row) for 11 inches or 28 cm Continue with different colours of wool until the knitting measures 23 inches or 58 cm Cast off. Decorate and finish Attach beads, flowers, loops etc firmly to knit side. Sew together the edges with the purl side facing out. Turn inside out Bring together the cast on and cast off edges and sew along the edge. |
